“Seven in 10 Protestants ages 18 to 30-both evangelical and mainline-who went to church regularly in high school said they quit attending by age 23, according to the survey by LifeWay Research.” (USA Today)
Those are staggering results! What are we doing to change them?
For young adults, Don’t Check Your Brains at the Door provides answers to change the way we think. Authors Josh McDowell and Bob Hostetler answer some tough questions regarding the Bible, God, religion, and the Christian life in general.
We live in a world full of opinions, myths, images, and more. I would have loved to have answers like this growing up. The few times I did go to church, I can’t tell you what I learned. It wasn’t until 2006 that I really learned about Jesus Christ. Offering Don’t Check Your Brains at the Door to your teens today could change the impact of their future.
It seems today that parents rely too much on the church to “raise their kids up in the way they should go.” Sending them to the youth group for an hour once a week isn’t enough. As parents, you are responsible to continue growing them in the faith. This book could perhaps give you some answers you’ve been searching for as well.
I think it would make a great dinner chat. Perhaps read it together as a family. The questions and references at the end of each chapter could add some great fun to the family. McDowell and Hostetler add doses of humor to the book, which of course I loved.
Here are just a few myths covered in this insightful book:
- Myths about Jesus: Prophet Jesus, Superstar Myth, Wimpy Jesus, Plastic Jesus, Lily-White Jesus
- Myths about God: The Cosmic Cop, The Luke Skywalker God, the Vending Machine God
- Myths about the Resurrection: Swoon Myth, Wrong Tomb Myth, Stolen Body Myth
Again, it’s a great book for any young person wanting to learn more about their faith. Continue to instill this knowledge in your children before they go off to high school or college.
